Every business has a story. Some begin with a grand vision, while others are born out of necessity, uncertainty, and the courage to start again.

For Hyenas Virtual Assistance Services, it was a little bit of everything.

Hello! I'm Jam Brazil Reña, founder of Hyenas Virtual Assistance Services, and I'd like to share the story behind our company, the experiences that shaped our journey, and the purpose that continues to drive us forward.

𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐈𝐭 𝐀𝐥𝐥 𝐁𝐞𝐠𝐚𝐧

My journey in the professional world began long before Hyenas came to life. I started working as a Virtual Assistant in 2016, following several years of experience in the BPO industry. Those years helped me develop the knowledge, skills, and work ethic that would eventually shape the professional and business owner I am today.

In 2018, I made a life-changing decision to step away from the traditional office environment. My daughter was only a year old, and I wanted to be more present in her life while continuing to provide for my family. Looking back, that decision became one of the most meaningful turning points in my career. It showed me that professional growth and family life could coexist, even if finding the right balance wasn't always easy.

Then came 2020.

As the pandemic disrupted lives and livelihoods around the world, I was fortunate to be working as a Human Resources Coordinator in the healthcare industry. At the time, I was balancing my responsibilities as a working mother with the demands of my career. Eventually, I decided to let go of my other clients and focus on one job. I believed that dedicating my time and energy to a single opportunity was the right decision.

I never imagined how much that decision would teach me.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐞𝐭𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐝 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠

In 2023, after dedicating more than five years of my professional life to the same employer, I lost my job.

I had no backup plan. I felt lost, devastated, and afraid of what would come next. As a breadwinner, I wasn't just worried about my own future. I was thinking about the bills that needed to be paid, the parents I needed to support, and the family that depended on me.

It was one of the most difficult periods of my life.

I returned to the job market, hoping to rebuild what I had lost. But the competition was intense, and rejection after rejection began to take its toll. I submitted applications, explored opportunities, and did everything I could to find stable work. Despite my experience and skills, landing a job felt like searching for a needle in a haystack.

There were days when the uncertainty felt overwhelming. I questioned myself, worried about our financial future, and wondered how I would get back on my feet.

But even in those difficult moments, I knew I couldn't afford to give up.

I kept moving forward, one application and one opportunity at a time. By God's grace, I eventually landed two clients. Slowly, I began to regain my confidence and rediscover the drive that had brought me into the Virtual Assistant industry in the first place.

Yet something continued to occupy my thoughts.

I knew what it felt like to lose a source of income without having a safety net. I knew the anxiety of starting over and the pressure of being responsible for a family. And I began to think about other Virtual Assistants, especially mothers, who might one day find themselves in the same situation.

What if I could turn my experience into an opportunity for others?

What if I could build a community where Virtual Assistants could find work, support one another, and have access to additional income opportunities instead of having to navigate everything alone?

That question became the beginning of something bigger than myself.

𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐚 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐠𝐠𝐥𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐚 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐏𝐮𝐫𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐞

In November 2023, I decided to take that first step.

I started from scratch, building the foundations of what would eventually become Hyenas Virtual Assistance Services. I created the business name, designed the logo, built the website, and began laying the groundwork for a community of freelancers.

My initial vision was simple: to create a group where Virtual Assistant mothers could find side-hustle opportunities to supplement their income while managing their responsibilities at home.

𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐇𝐲𝐞𝐧𝐚𝐬?

Our name represents more than a brand. It reflects the spirit of teamwork at the heart of our business.

A group of hyenas is called a cackle. While hyenas are often misunderstood, they are also known for their social nature and their ability to work together.

That idea resonated with me.

In our story, the hyenas represent our team: individuals with different strengths, skills, and experiences who can accomplish more when they work together. The opportunities we pursue represent the goals we strive to achieve, and our collective effort represents the determination it takes to succeed in a competitive industry.

We believe that success doesn't have to be a solitary pursuit.

When one team member grows, the entire team becomes stronger. When we share knowledge, support one another, and work toward a common goal, we create opportunities that might not have been possible on our own.

At Hyenas, we believe that collaboration creates strength, and that every individual has something valuable to contribute.

I wanted to create opportunities that could make a difference, even in small ways. Sometimes, an additional client could mean extra money for groceries, help with household bills, or a little more financial breathing room for a family.

I understood that reality because I had lived it myself.

Our early work focused on supporting food bloggers, connecting them with Virtual Assistants who had the right skills to help manage and grow their businesses. As the community expanded, so did our vision.

We realized that the need for opportunities, support, and meaningful professional connections extended beyond mothers. Talented Virtual Assistants from different backgrounds were looking for work, while business owners needed capable people they could trust to help them manage their growing workloads.

And so, what began as a small initiative to help VA mothers gradually evolved into a broader mission: to connect skilled Virtual Assistants with businesses that need their expertise.

That mission continues to guide us today.

𝐀 𝐋𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐕𝐢𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭

If there is one important lesson my journey has taught me, it is this: never build your professional future around the assumption that one opportunity will last forever.

Having a long-term client is a blessing. However, businesses evolve, budgets change, projects end, and circumstances shift. Sometimes, even the most dedicated professionals find themselves having to start over through no fault of their own.

That's why I encourage every Virtual Assistant to keep learning, continue developing valuable skills, build professional relationships, and explore opportunities to diversify their income when possible.

Don't wait until you lose a client to start looking for another one. Don't stop learning just because your current role feels secure. And don't underestimate the value of building a professional network that can support you throughout your career.

For those who dream of starting their own VA agency, I hope my story reminds you that you don't need to have everything figured out before you begin.

You don't need a perfect website, a large team, or a substantial amount of capital to take your first step. What you need is a clear purpose, a willingness to learn, the discipline to keep going, and the courage to begin even when the outcome is uncertain.

There will be challenges. There will be setbacks. You will make mistakes and learn lessons along the way.

But sometimes, the experiences that challenge us the most become the very things that inspire us to build something meaningful.

Hyenas began with a simple idea and a determination to create opportunities. It continues to grow because of the people who believe in that idea and the work we do together.
